Reporting, Research & Writing
As a journalist with deep training in historical and geographical research, Boyce specializes in telling complex stories that nonetheless retain a narrative arc and compelling writing. He often delves into science and philosophy, though without abandoning the clarity needed for a general audience.
Teaching & Speaking
Boyce is an accomplished educator and speaker, with experience ranging from ESPN-produced TV shows to conference keynotes to online courses. Previous featured speaking engagements include Tulane University’s School of Architecture, the Illinois Association of Floodplain Mangers, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and the Museum of Mississippi History. He has taught writing courses with Catapult and the Loft Literary Center.
Developmental Editing & Coaching
As an editor, Boyce has worked with both emerging writers and New York Times-bestsellers, and on material that has ranged from personal memoir to deep-dive journalistic narratives. The work he’s edited has been nominated for a James Beard Award, featured in Longreads, and translated into other languages. He is available for one-on-one coaching and contracts for longform projects.
“I have really benefited from Boyce's skills as an editor. He's not only a good wordsmith, but is also interested in the bigger picture, in how my writing addresses larger issues of our time and our world. His experience with outlets and editors provides insights into the publishing world, and valuable feedback about what kind of writing connects with readers."
—Patrick Dean, author of A Window to Heaven
“When I was working on the essay for my book, I struggled mightily to complete it. I just don’t enjoy writing and although words sometimes fall out of my head in a nice way, the craft of writing is an ordeal. Boyce was able to help me structure my ideas in ways that made me look and sound much smarter than I really am, but mostly he helped me finish a project that wouldn’t have been completed without him.”
